SHADES OF GREY

Vol 10 No. 1 February 2005

  In this Issue:

Welcome

Welcome to 2005! It does't take long for the new year to start rolling and for all we active people to get into top gear. U3A, Senior Citizen's Club, and the Excelsior Club are all underway with all the old and some new activities. An enthusiastic class had their first Tai Chi for Arthritis try out Tuesday and judging by the appreciative comments it's just what the doctor ordered.

Research

An international team of researchers has shown that the "polymeal" (includes wine, chocolate, fruits and vegetables eaten daily) can reduce the risk of heart disease by 76 percent. For a better look at this go to the Bristish Medical Journal

Family faces are mirrors. Looking at people who belong to us, we see the past, present and future.

St Valentine's Day

Known as the saint of young lovers, Valentine, a priest, disobeyed his Roman superiors by marrying young couples. At the time Emperor Claudius II had banned all marriages because he thought that married young men would not leave their wives and families to join the army.

Valentine was beaten to death and his head cut off and in time his martyrdom became the focus for the Christianization of a pagan ritual that was celebrated at about the same time, mid-February.

Young love is very special, but let's not forget the love that has developed and flourished for years, the love that thrives in a family, between generations, between friends, between neighbours. If you would like to bake a cake to celebrate this form of love try this:

cupid

Love Cake

Mix together thoroughly 1 cup good thoughts, 1 cup kind deeds, 1 cup consideration for others, 2 cups sacrifice, 2 cups well-beaten faults, 3 cups of forgiveness.

Add tears of joy, sorrow, and sympathy; flavour with love and kindly service.

Fold into daily life; bake well with the warmth of human kindness and serve with a smile, anytime!!!

Other things may change us, but we start and end with the family.

Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be
The last of life, for which the first was made;
Our times are in His hand
Who saith, "A whole I planned,
Youth shows but half; trust God;
see all nor be afraid!"

Risky Behaviour Can Cause a Fall

At 60, it may not be wise to do some of the things you did at 20.

A slip or trip on level surface is bad enough, but a fall from a ladder can be catastrophic. Remember that old saying "pride goes before a fall". Only too often it does.

Falling off ladder

Warning from NRMA - Important!

Imagine: you walk across the carpark, unlock you car and get inside. Then you lock all your doors, start the engine and shift into Reverse, and you look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your parking space and you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift the gear stick back into Park, unlock your doors and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view.

When you reach the back of your car, that is when the car-jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off!! Your engine was running, you would have left your purse in the car and they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.

BE AWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED IN SYDNEY

Just drive away and remove the paper that is stuck to your window later, and be thankful that you read this email.

A purse contains all your identification, and you certainly do NOT want someone getting your home address. They already have your keys!!!!
